Fourteen days of gastronomic explosions with the ever changing dishes unique to each area of the island. Return home as a guru in your curries and spices. Be it a beginner who has never cooked or an expert chef or even a foodie who loves to explore the boundaries of your palate this tour has cooking classes arranged for you at many locations along the way.

Day 1

Airport - Horathapola

You will be picked from the airport by a representative.

Stop for a Thambili (King Coconut) drink on your way.

Arrive in Horathapola and check in at hotel.

Lay back in your balcony with a good book and a cup of Ceylon tea.

Rest of the day at leisure to explore the city on your own.

Tonight you will savour the most delicious Black Pork curry and an array of home cooked local curries. All ingredients as well as most spices used are freshly picked from the estates’ garden.

Day 2

Horathapola - Kandy

After a relaxed breakfast proceed to Kandy.

En-route, visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, the only one of its kind in the world. There are about 40 animals residing here presently ranging from the ages of a few months to several adults who act as foster parents to the young ones.

Arrive in the Hill country capital Kandy, which is the last stronghold of Sinhala Kings and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Wander around the lake and the streets of Kandy exploring this wonderful city and its markets.

For those interested in shopping for gems, antiques, clothes and leather use our shopping guide and explore the local markets and shops.

In the evening visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha.

To experience the Buddhist tradition and ways, we suggest you get there for an evening Pooja ceremony.

Kandyan curries (which were made as per recipes passed down from generation to generation) can be enjoyed this evening, at the Kandy House. This food is rich in distinct flavour and is either cooked in coconut milk or fried in coconut oil. (Supplements may apply)

Day 3

Kandy

Breakfast at the hotel.

Visit the local markets to pick up a few fresh vegetables this morning as today you will engage in a cooking program conducted by the house lady of the “Villa Sandalwood” hotel, Kandy. (supplements may apply)

This is a rare opportunity to witness the methods of cooking Sri Lankan dishes and desserts.

In the evening witness a cultural show which will highlight different forms of Kandy dancing and drumming.

Day 4

Kandy - Dickoya

Breakfast at the hotel and set off to Dickoya with en route stops in Nuwara Eliya.

Dubbed the ‘Little England of Sri Lanka’, Nuwara Eliya is located in the thick, misty hills of this paradise isle. Take a tour around the city this afternoon to wander the streets of Nuwara Eliya.

Arrive in time for a superb three course lunch overlooking the beautiful Castlereagh Lake. The chef will discuss with you, your evening meal.

Put your sneakers on and stride out into the picturesque tea country.

Enjoy the best cream tea in Sri Lanka.

Day 5

Dickoya

Spend the morning, seeing how Ceylon tea is made and learn the art of becoming a good tea taster.

Visit the nearby Warleigh Church built in 1878 by early British planters. It is situated in one of the most stunning locations.

Stroll through the tea gardens and visit the local tea pluckers’ crèche that is supported by Ceylon Tea Trails and the MJF Foundation.

Day 6

Dickoya - Weerawila

Early breakfast and then proceed to Weerawila.

Take a stop at Kataragama.

Kataragama is home to one of the most important religious sites in Sri Lanka that draws pilgrims from various faiths.

Arrive at Weerawila where you will stay in mud huts. It’s a truly magical location and experience.

Fall in love with their delicious organic vegetable curries with string hoppers. All food served here are made from their home grown vegetables or locally sourced.

Day 7

Weerawila

Enjoy a traditional Sri Lanka breakfast!

Then explore the city on a bike, taking stops for tea or sightseeing and making friends.

The serenity of the night time in Weerawila is unparalleled to any other with the un-spoilt sounds of the wilderness.

You can either enjoy your night by the lake or go out on a boat ride and catch some fish for a BBQ.

Day 8

Weerawila- Tangalle

Breakfast at hotel and proceed to Tangalle with en-route stop at Bundala National Park, Mulgirigala Temple and Rekawa Turtle Hatchery.

First stop is at Bundala National Park.

A one-of-a-kind location where the land, sea and wetlands meet, Bundala is particularly popular among birders as it is a wintering site for migratory birds. The park is home to a diverse variety of wildlife including the spotted deer, the rare pangolin and playful grey langur monkeys.

Then head to Mulgirigala Temple.

The walk up the 200m high rock to get to the cave temples can be a challenging task. But fret not; along the climb are a few locations where the travellers get a few interludes, comprising of terraces with small temples, Buddha statues, pools of water and the breath-taking views of the surrounding countryside.  On one of the terraces, lies the main cave temple, notable for its Dutch tiles and the antique wooden chest and for the discovery of the ‘Rosetta stone’ that enabled the translation of ancient Sri Lankan texts.

The last stop for the day will be in Rekawa to visit the Turtle Hatchery and the conservation centre.

Protected by the Turtle Conservation Project since 1996, the sanctuary itself is quite distinct from turtle hatcheries as it protects the various nesting sites from predators. The site offers the chance for the visitors to watch the moving sight of the turtle mother laying her much treasured eggs into the hole she digs in the wet sand from her flippers.

Day 9

Tangalle

If you wish you can head down to the beach early morning and help the local fisherman pull in their daily catch.

It’s now time to learn about traditional Sri Lankan village cuisine.

Engage in a traditional cooking lesson with the executive chef at the Ranna212 where you will witness a demonstration of local cuisine and other special dishes on request.

Day 10

Tangalle - Galle

After an early breakfast proceed to Galle.

En-route taste some of the Sri Lanka’s delicious short eats from fish buns to vegetable rolls and uludu at a local bakery in Matara. (payable directly)

Arrive on Galle.

In the afternoon stroll through the streets of the UNESCO World Heritage Site – Galle Fort. It is considered as one of the best examples of a living fortified city built by Europeans in South and South East Asia.

Day 11

Galle

Rest of the day at leisure.

This evening you will head into Galle Fort and have wonderful rice and curry served with a colonial accent in this grand dining room.

Day 12

Galle - Colombo

Breakfast at the hotel and then proceed to Colombo.

Take time to stop for some last minute shopping this morning.

On your way stop over at The House of Roti in Hikkaduwa to enjoy some Sri Lanka’s delicious mid-morning snack. (payable directly)

A quick stop in Kalutara to stock up on one of our favourite tropical fruits – Mangoosteens. (season is April to September)

For lunch we will head to a local restaurant that specialize in Northern Cuisine where you will taste some truly authentic food such as chilli crab and Jaffna omelettes – all served on a banana leaf (payable directly)

This evening you will head to Sri Lanka’s oldest Muslim Cafés for some mouth-watering Chicken Masala and super delicious Buryani.

Colombo

Day at leisure to explore the city on your own.
